Warren takes opening Supersport race win

Seton Yamaha's Sam Warren emerged victorious in first race of the Motorpoint British Supersport Championship in drying conditions at Brands Hatch this afternoon.

After a small rain shower before the race, the race was declared wet and gambles were taken on tyres. Christian Iddon put in a dry rear, Ben Wilson and Sam Warren an intermediate and Luke Jones a wet rear. It was Wilson who took the hole shot and followed by putting a second into the chasing pack almost immediately.

Behind him were Iddon, Warren and Finn Pauli Pekkanen. As Wilson extended his lead at the front, Warren slipped under Iddon on the breaks into Paddock Hill Bend to take second and had the green Gearlink Kawasaki of Wilson in his sight. He cut Wilson’s lead of 1.8 seconds down to nothing in the space of three laps.

As Wilson held Warren at bay, Luke Jones began to make his way up the field; first diving past Jack Kennedy, then Pekkanen and finally he went around the outside of Iddon at Clearways. Then Wilson paid the penalty for his early charge. With his tyre shot, he spun up as he exited Clearways and past went the Yamaha of Warren and the Triumph of Jones. Then the 2011 Triumph Triple Champion took the lead as Jones dived under the inside of Warren at Druids.

On lap eleven of eighteen it ended for Jones though, on the high speed entry to Druids he lost the front on the brakes and in conjunction with another accident elsewhere, the red flag came out. Warren took the victory followed by Ben Wilson and Pauli Pekkanen on the podium. Fourth was Iddon and next was the Cup winner, Glenn Irwin. Sixth was Jack Kennedy after his gamble on dry tyres didn’t pay off and Jimmy Hill, Dean Hipwell, pole setter Billy McConnell and Daniel Cooper rounded out the top ten.
